Welcome to Gay and Lesbian Vancouver
Vancouver is a city which eagerly celebrates diversity. Sometimes referred to as San Francisco North and Hollywood North, Vancouver has vibrant gay and lesbian neighbourhoods, GLBT arts events, fabulous nightlife and a Pride festival which is 30 years old. Over 350,000 people come out to join the festivities of the annual Pride Parade (Vancouver’s largest parade) which is one of the highlights of the summer for both gay and mainstream residents and visitors. Politically and legally, Vancouver (and all of Canada) is intolerant of discrimination of any kind. Since 2003, Vancouver has been one of the few places in the world where same sex marriage is legal and recognized.
Vancouver hosts some of the biggest LGBT events in the world.
Vancouver has hosted many events including the 1990 Gay Games, 1996 International AIDS Conference, 2001 World Figure Skating Championships, 2006 World Hemophilia Congress, 2007 World Congress of the Intl. Union of Health Promotion & Education, and the 2004 IGLTA Conference. Coming up, Vancouver will be hosting the 2008 Interpride Conference, the 9th Annual International Conference on Gay & Lesbian Tourism (Community Marketing), the 2009 World Police & Fire Games and the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.
Vancouver continues to have new and exciting product.
Vancouver will soon be welcoming several new luxury hotels including North America’s first Shangri-La hotel and a new Fairmont property, both a stones throw from the new Convention and Exhibition Centre on Vancouver’s scenic waterfront.
The new Convention Centre, stated to open in 2009, will triple Vancouver’s conference space and is leading edge in green building standards and features.
In time for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, Vancouver will roll out a host of transit improvements and the all new Canada Line rapid transit system from Vancouver International Airport to downtown.
